Community Support Programs

We aim to support the Huilloc community by first listening to the village (President, Village Elders, School Director etc.). We hear what the community feels they need and we focus on those sustainable improvements in a culturally informed, community guided and person-centered manner. Below are a few of our current programs.

Project Canasta

Most, if not all, families in the Huilloc community are currently undergoing some form of food insecurity due to the implications the Covid-19 pandemic is having on employment and family income. Many village families have reduced meals and at times missed meals. Within the village, families have access to corn, quinoa, guinea pig and potatoes. However, they lack access, both financial and transportation, to other basic cooking necessities such as cooking oil, rice, sugar, milk, oatmeal, noodles and tuna fish (for protein).

Our goal was to alleviate short term food insecurity for Huilloc families brought on by the health and economic implications of the current Covid-19 pandemic. Working with John Auccapuma, Community Coordinator in the Huilloc, we purchased baskets, or canastas, full of basic foodstuffs and delivered them to each family in the Huilloc. Through the generosity of our donors each of the roughly 310 families received 3 canastas during the pandemic so far.

Our goal was to provide each family with a basket (“Canasta”) of food necessities including 10# Rice, 10# Sugar, 1L soymilk, 2 Gallons of Oil, 1 large bag of oatmeal, 1 large bag of noodles, 2-3 cans of tuna. Each Canasta contains enough to last 4-6 weeks for a 4-person family.

John Auccapuma, Community Coordinator, purchased the necessary food items in Cusco with the support of Jany, Odon and the rest of our Peru logistics team. John and our support group then assembled individual bags for each of the 310 families in the Huilloc and loaded them on trucks to take up to the Huilloc village.

Upon arrival in the Huilloc, John and team worked with three Community Liaisons (Lourdes, Martha and Rosario) to distribute Canastas to each of the families.

Through the generosity of our donors and the hard work of our team in Peru we have been able to provide make delivery of three rounds of Canastas to each Huilloc family.

Greenhouse Project

We are partnering with Lakeville Rotary and the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development (AASD) to help support and train Huilloc villagers building their own household greenhouses. Due to soil and weather conditions the village is currently limited to growing potatoes and quinoa. The greenhouses will enable villagers to grow (and sell) their own fruits and vegetables helping to strengthen their nutrition and economic well-being. As of October, 2022 thirty families have built greenhouses growing vegetables and fruit for family and community use as well as for sale.

Huilloc Soccer

ACP supports the community soccer team by funding their soccer team uniforms. The team regularly wins regional tournaments and are a source of community pride in the village.
